Crime follows opportunity. As the Internet and underlying networked technology has continued to develop and grow, so has the opportunity for online deception incidents. When the broader context of online deception incidents is examined, seven archetypical ways – called deception tactics – in which deceivers can induce a victim’s incorrect cognitive representation can be identified, according to the theory of deception.
The deception tactics used online are:
01. Masking - Eliminating or erasing crucial information so that representation of key aspects of the item does not occur, or produces an incorrect result.
02. Dazzling - Obscuring or blurring information about the deception core, without eliminating it.
03. Decoying - Distracting the victim’s attention away from what is really going on.
04. Mimicking - Assuming somebody else’s identity or modifying the core so it copies the features of a legitimate item.
05. Inventing - “Making up” information about the core. The core might not exist, or its characteristics might be utterly unrealistic.
06. Relabeling - Describing the core and its characteristics expressly to mislead.
07. Double play - Convincing the victim that he/she is taking unfair advantage of the deceiver.
